It took a while to know what this book was about but once I realised it was set in the period between the world wars it had my interest. I found it deeply satisfying.

The book takes place from to or so and really is about the rise of power in Germany of Hitler and the Third Reich. She is depicted as shallow and mindless, possibly due to the wealth she inherited from her family and thus the lack of any knowledge in consideration to real world problems.

Should I read the first two Lanny Budd books before diving into this one? In the second half of the duentes, the pace clicks into high gear as Lanny struggles to rescue Jewish relatives from imprisonment and torture in Germany. I found myself reading a couple of pages and then realizing I hadn’t read them well. This book has many weaknesses, but the worst for me was an ironic, nudge-and-wink quality to the writing that I suspect was seen as clever at the time, but I found really annoying. Lanny Budd, who is blessed with pretty much everything a man could reasonably expect in life, is one of the few who cares to seek the truth instead of sitting back and grossly underestimating Hitler, as most Westerners do.
