It took a while to know what this book was about but once I realised it was set in the period between the world wars it had my interest. I found it deeply satisfying.

The book takes place from to or so and really is about the rise of power in Germany of Hitler and the Third Reich. Pos, Goering and Goebbels appear in the novel and interact with the main character, Lanny Budd. She is depicted as shallow and mindless, possibly due to the wealth she inherited from her family and thus the lack of any knowledge in consideration to real world problems.
Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. At times, the tone is satirical, and in a few places made me laugh out loud, mostly in the beginning. Should I read the first two Lanny Budd books before diving into this one? I’m nearing the end of this Pulitzer challenge, and this book along with the not-at-all famous The Reivers makes me think there’s a category I’m missing in my spreadsheet.
The radio, then television…only recently have ordinary people had the means to record and disseminate information on the phone they carry with them everywhere. In the second half of the duentes, the pace clicks into high gear as Lanny struggles to rescue Jewish relatives from imprisonment and torture in Germany. Later the tone changes and is sharper, angrier. Which brings up another issue with the novel.

My problem was that it is filled with such detail and historical references of the time period that I got lost in all of the characters — real and invented — and developments.
I found myself reading a couple of pages and then realizing I hadn’t read them well. These direct experiences expos Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. For those that love history, literary fiction, or political science—or all three—highly recommended! I could feel the fear that must have pervaded Germany at this time, the insecurity from the top to the bottom of society.

Preview — Dragon’s Teeth by Upton Sinclair. A great look at the Nazi rise to power and how it affected Dragon’s Teeth was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel. The first half sets the stage of the Budd family their associates business partners as they interact with the new German government. He has to understand the minds of other men, both foes and friends, and what greeds, fears, hates, jealousies will move them to action.
This book has many weaknesses, but the worst for me was an ironic, nudge-and-wink quality to the writing that I suspect was seen as clever at the time, but I found really annoying. Lanny Budd, who is blessed with pretty much everything a man could reasonably expect in life, is one of the few who cares to seek the truth instead of sitting back and grossly underestimating Hitler, as most Westerners do.
