The Persecutor by Sergei Kourdakov
It sounded uninteresting at first, but it was so great to read. You’ve been dealing with that kind. I liked that Kourdakov saw the examples of the believers, especially Natasha, and eventually joined Christianity. But he could not quell the growing doubts that these quiet, unassuming folks really posed a legitimate threat to the power-structure.
So of course this made me insatiably curious and a little ljbro.

Jonathan Heppner rated it liked it Oct 11, Religion represents no threat. I understand that some “Christians” can give God a bad name, they can be overbearing, hypocritical–but we’re all human. It’s a fine story. However, after encountering Natasha, not The Persecutor was a fantastic read of an atheist, leader of the Communist Youth League and leader of a secret police force that performed over raids on believers.
In turn this influences him to look beyond what he had been taught over the years to learn more about the people he persecuted. This book is especially relevant because of the fact that the same tactics that were used to indoctrinate communist youth could still happen today.
However an American psychologist who had studied this documentary is certain and I agree that this journalist was way to inexperienced to take on such a task and found that the body language of many of those interviewed indicate that they were not telling the truth, at least not the full truth.
They were no threat to the state.
I will never forget you Sergei, thank you for sharing with us this wonderful book of your life. Esbirri for my part I have abandoned the idea of publishing this translation of mine until some better evidence shows up that confirms Kourdakov’s story. They were no threat to the state. I’ve read it several times. That;s our great enemy. The church represents no threats. The writing is weak, but what do you expect from a normal guy from Russia writing in a language that is not his own. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. No trivia or quizzes yet. This book was so meh, and it was not for me at all.
It’s the Believers themselves who are the threat Things had not been as ext I have read this book 2 or 3 times over and was very moved by it, even translated it to my own language. From chapter one, I was hooked. This has been one of my favorite books that I have ever read.
