Images of her daughter Kate feel the most poignant, and sometimes she seems to be grasping for time with her again, but she also realizes that these hopes are impossible. This, of course, is no fault of Didion’s, but unfortunately it tamed some of the novel’s viciousness.
Yeah, this book made me think of that empty feeling, that feeling that even in safe places there were gaps, snakes, sewers, and darkness.
Raised in the ghost town of Silver Wells, Nevada, Maria Wyeth is an ex-model and the star of two films directed by her estranged husband, Carter Lang. Its vapidity is juxtaposed with the opulent rituals of its self-important players, and with the desperation of those who will only ever hope to play such a role.
It was rich with the feelings that make you feel alive just by your own juxtaposition to the toxic characters. Since both these definitely describe me, it’s not surprising that I did enjoy this book. The movie is a big hit.
