I read cokch lot of books, and usually after a couple pages I find myself skimming while keeping an eye out for the plot points I know are coming. No character development, no growth, no knowledge acquired, no new skills learned, no relationships built that aren’t immediately abandoned and forgotten. However, I feel that this book is even more important than “The Handmaid’s Tale.
Furthermore, the decision to narrate the story from a single female character’s point of view, and to eschew grand battle scenes and so on in favor of intrigue, scheming, and maneuvering, all seen from close range, makes this a very different sort of a story than the bulk of fantasy and sci-fi out there. More importantly though is that the map looks like something that would be included at the beginning of Lord of the Rings.

This is not a book for kids or for wilistra looking for a simple, pulp-action space adventure. The plot is driven by a quest by the ruler of the most influential center of this odd prostitution the “high couch” — “couch” is the word used for having sex in Morris’s world to find her mysterious father.
Ms Morris writes with an exceptionally skilled hand – her fantasy worlds come alive like a breath of xilistra and I found myself swept into this tale, so much so I could hardly put the book down. The “help” she receives along the way from various men is complicated for lack of a better word. Some Goodreads reviewers called it ‘feminist’ which, emphatically, it isn’t. The characters, too, are a mix of good and bad, but no way clear cut. Just a lot of rape and abuse and then a ending that suggests enlightenment It all took place in one region of one planet, lovingly described, and all the aliens that got passing mentions could have easily just been from different parts of the planet for all I knew or cared.
It was pretty soundly fantasy even though there was talk of space travel and alien races. She is celebrated for her beauty, her lineage and the fact that as High Couch of the most celebrated house of pleasure in all the civilized stars, she commands a great price. Silistra is a world of contrasts — islistra people long-lived, its terrain in places inhospitable and its morals unusual.
Because it comes out of nowhere, and once it starts, it seems like it never ends. Like all of Morris’ books, there is a lot to think about in High Couch silistea Silistra — questions of philosophy, sociology, sexuality, and governmental rule. With the foundation thus revealed, we can better appreciate the setting. The concept and style of writing, in my opinion, are very modern and have strong feminist tones.
