The same life that the immigrant generation craved for and is deprived of, the next generation breathes and lives in Since the age of five she has lived with the knowledge that she is gifted, a mathematics prodigy for whom the secret world of numbers offers a reassuring solidity amid the uncertainties that scar her childhood.

It is well written and you will care about the characters, and feel deeply for the child in the book, along with her well-meaning parents who think they are doing what is right for their child. She lives in London. I’m not saying lalwain every girl shouldn’t listen to their parents, but every parent should also listen to their children and support them in what they want in life.

May 24, YoSafBridg rated it really liked it. What might it look like if it were inflated to 2. Education exerts a powerful hold on the immigrant imagination. Somewhere somehow I had gleaned that this is a YA novel, which it certainly isn’t.

Above all, it has a wonderfully bittersweet charm and for that reason Desmond Elliott would have loved it. The book follows Rumi to Oxford at the age of 15, but seems to end rather abruptly Fascinating concept, but totally unfulfilling conclusion! She’s supposedly gifted at Math – she enjoys it even. No tiene un agregado. I thought this book was very inspirational. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up.

This is a fascinating and completely believable story about a girl who speaks math in a world that speaks of cultures, faiths, values, expectations, and the roles of women and men. They were hardly shopkeepers. The proof that his rigid belief’s are the right way to raise children. She also enjoys play with her younger brother Nibu. Gifted was a tad bit more literary than what I’d been hoping for. We thought it was an entirely normal pursuit.

I ended up putting it aside until I had a hard copy to read, which apparently took about four years. Also, I sure wouldn’t hand a year-old a book with the “c” word in it It taught me that there are dreams that any girl would want to fulfill but there are always obstacles in your path lalsani achieve what you want. Jan 12, Jade Crowell rated it really liked it.

Only white people have sex. What we call foreign is home for these new kids on the block. Nikita has bluntly etched out the characters of Mahesh and Shreene. It was very well written. Rumi knows how old she is too. I really don’t nioita it’s fair to have your reader put the book down and Google something every 10 minutes.

Rumi’s precocious talent enables her to begin an Oxford degree when only 15 years, three months and eight days old, and it is here that she finally begins to emerge from her parents’ shadow.

At 10, Rumi is in advanced maths, and at 14, she sits for her A levels. She won’t let us settle back in comfortable judgment on this family.

Gifted by Nikita Lalwani

Not a prodigy, one who start gitted astrophysics papers at lalwabi, but a merely “gifted” child who skips high school. In the end, the intense expectations of a family with everything to prove will be a combustible ingredient as an intelligent but naive girl is thrust into the adult world before she has time to grow up. Rumika Vasi, the gifted daughter of Shrene and Mahesh is trapped in the similar situation.

Like most adolescents, Rumi is more interested in fitting in and preserving “her carefully arranged obscurity. I expected to like this book. Jul 24, Deb Readerbuzz Nance rated it really liked it. Yet Rumi is growing up like any other normal teen: Her weekends are “timetabled to the maximum, the days compartmentalized into breaks and study like the black and white keys on a piano. Rumi experiences freedom lalwai on many levels as a child—freedom from academic rigor and playground politics, but also a sense of place and belonging.

I found this book uneven, but the raggedness with which the story unfolds is in some ways a perfect mirror for the way that this child’s life gradually goes further and further off course.

Aug 22, Kkraemer rated it it was amazing. There are no late realizations about being open to their daughter’s feelings or turning a new leaf and finally being together as a happy family. The main character is prodded and pushed, scheduled and organized, from the time she enters school by her parents. It is not one of lakwani better works. I liked it obviously, I gave it a solid 4 stars.
