Poulenc ‘s setting of Psalm 81, Exultate Deo “Sing Aloud Unto God” reflects the point at which the composer’s devotion to music crosses paths ;oulenc his faith in God.
As the phrase “exultate Deo” reappears in the text, we hear the rising motive from the beginning, sung as if to start another imitative entrance; it takes a different turn at the end, however, leading to a hushed homophonic passage.
For this, Polyphony is joined by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, where Stephen Layton presides as director of music, along with the taut playing of the Britten Sinfonia.
