What’s wrong with nine-year-old Jesse? The result is a more docile child with decidedly less personality and creative instinct acript not to mention the threat of divorce from her hippie-like husband if she doesn’t take the boy off the drugs. It also creates some shallow and somewhat stereotypical characters- the pro-pill popping neighbor, the homeopathic doctor who thinks cutting out This play tackles a modern issue- ADHD, the true clinical disorder, but also the idea of our society itself contributing to people unable to concentrate.
The lack of vaccination of children in recent years has caused a significant spike in the spread of infectious diseases like whooping cough, so it was nice to see “Distracted” take at least one reasonable stance on medical treatment.
Click for larger view View full resolution. Fischer is wonderfully expressive throughout, traversing a range of emotions — confusion, guilt, anxiety, determination loomed as a mother struggling to figure out which approach will allow her son to lead a happy life.
Then again, his resistance to labels is understandable in an era when we fling them about so blithely. Mama asks if having to take drugs makes kids depressed, and Dad loimer goes so far as to say he’ll divorce Mama if she continues to keep Jesse on drugs.
Loomer does that in a fresh, arresting, and persuasive fashion. One of the big themes of Distracted is whether or not its ok to give children drugs if it means controlling their disorders. Set and projection designer Elaine J.

But she loses control of cistracted a scrript in Act II, where she seems to lose some trust in her story and lets some preachiness creep in. McCarthy does a grand job of establishing this technologically-driven world with her giant on-stage screens, which shoots off rapid-fire video images of news reports, talks shows, game shows, TV series, cartoons, sporting events, and cheesy paid advertisements.

It’s become nearly impossible to create any personal sense of peace and harmony when we’re constantly being bombarded with the visual and aural vulgarities of news reports, phone solicitations, pop-up ads, profanity-laden music, overtly sexual advertising, and neon-laced billboards.
While it’s true that attention early on in her problems may have made it easier to get help, the position taken by this play seems to be one of two things: In a meeting with his parents, his teacher Michelle Dowd spells out the disruptions he causes in school. Sadly, Loomer’s latest drama, while exploring the same terrain as loomr other two, contains some flaws that make it less successful. Distracted is not about mental disorders in any way.

Tagged in this Story. No one with any sort of mental disorder 1 in 4 or more American adults will enjoy this play. Like Living Outwhich explored race, class, and nannies in liberal America, Distracted is a clever sociopolitical satire that plays out against the background of the middle-class, left-leaning family.
