The piece is marked Lento con gran espressione and is written in common time. Performer Pages Aya Higuchi piano. The Henle Urtext versions, considered by many to be accurate, appears to contain many editorial modifications from the original manuscripts, including the F in place of the original D as mentioned in the miscellaneous notes above.

After a soft, sad introduction, the main theme starts at bar 5, with the left hand playing broken chords in legato slurs throughout the section, imparting a haunting and continuous quality to the music.
