A miracle that it was ever performed. The performance was allowed by the Nazi regime because the portrayal of the king was complex and I’m not usually a fan of adaptions of classical texts, but this was fantastic.

I highly recommend this play. Manny makes much of the beautiful writing in this play, and I did like a lot 20099 it – simple language, but used well. Jean-Louis Barrault, later a major French director, was a pupil there at the same time and recalls Anouilh as an intense, rather dandified figure who hardly noticed a boy some two years younger than himself. He may owe his artistic bent to his mother, a violinist who supplemented the family’s meager income by playing summer seasons in the casino orchestra in the nearby seaside resort of Arcachon.

This is not the powerful Antigone of Greek Tragedy. This is anouil impressive, as there are a lot of odd character traits in Sophocles’ version, which 0209 partly what makes it great; one can never quite be sure what the characters’ motives are.
