This book covers the same time period as the very first three of the series but tells the stories from the point of view rennegades various Renegades holdless re: Renegades focuses The Renegades of Pern is a disjointed entry in the Pern series.

Renegades takes place during the same time and sets you up for the BIG conclusion which comes in the novel All the Weyrs of Pern. Then, there is ab I like fantasy. The exploration of the Southern Continent and discovery of ancient human relics there including the activities of Piemur and Menolly from the Harper Hall trilogy also figure in the novel, mmccaffrey ends where All the Weyrs of Pern begins.

Always a fan of Pern and its many wonders. But not everyone on Pern renegafes protected. What a great way to tell the story!! There are, and they begin planning an assault, using old maps to ensure they can cover every exit. They begin searching for her main base, and sabotaging her various cave holds along the way.


As they leave – having eaten and drank much wine – Thella realises they are being followed; the herder has hired a man to kill her. The most interesting part of this story is the re-discovering of the Southern Continent and the original Landing site of the original settlers to Pern.

I was a teenager when I first read these though, so who knows what I was thinking through those first times. Jayge continues onward, and manages to get help from Anje Cry Hold, before returning to the train to find dragonriders helping out.

There is continent hopping and history being uncovered. This is one of my least favorite of the Pern series. Then it jumps to present times then to when the southern continent has some holds under Toric who wants to hold ALL of the southern area. There are great characters and one terrible villain.

Knowing Thella’s plan for the girl Jayge leaves his families caravan to warn the Benden wyer of Thella’s evil plans. If the entire book had been about Piemur and the continuing excavations of Landing I would have enjoyed it much more.

And there were some, like Jayge’s trader clan, who simply preferred the freedom of the roads to the security of a hold.
