This does not excuse his alleged views on corporal punishment of children. Rather it reads as an extended research study based on personal descriptions and memories of camp life with accompanying analyses.
Bettelheim describes his initiation into the concentration camp experience, including his original transport to Dachau. At least this book for me was by far a lot bet By far the best book that explains the ‘mechanics’ of Nazism and inner psychology behind it.

According to Bettelheim the desire to dress in police uniforms demonstrates that the prisoners wish to be like the SS. Bruno Bettelheim had remarkable success in treating deeply emotionally disturbed children.
Alright, so Bettelheim was probably a douche. A guard discovered she was a dancer and made her dance for him; she danced right up to him, took his gun and shot him. Organizationally The Informed Heart is structured such that Bettelheim’s theoretical beliefs and ideas form the beginning and ending chapters, with the narrative of his time in the camps comprising the middle sections of the text.

Bettelheim’s discussion on autonomy isn’t all that different from Frankl’s logotherapy, but reading Bettelheim made me want to re-read Frankl again. Freud and Man’s Soul: A chapter examining the psychological defenses to the camp experience follows this discussion.
